Lesbian Subtext? Ehhhh... It ain't Xena & Gabrielle or even Rizzles, but...
Episodes are not necessarily listed in the order in which they were filmed or exhibited, but rather how they appear in the 30th Anniversary DVD Collection. In these six episodes, Meg Foster portrays Christine Cagney and honestly, she does a very solid job. Personally, I never watched the show during this time, so I missed many of these episodes until after the CBS run in the 1980's. The series was killed after these episodes, however, after some begging and pleading CBS said okay...but only if Foster was replaced. Rosenzweig  once said, "They described the [\Foster/Daly] relationship as 'far too intense' and the characters were almost interchangeable. There was a softness and humor missing there." Some people in the press said the two together created a lesbian subtext. I will say, at first I really didn't see any. But after looking closer, I noticed they do stand close and touch each other in some scenes. They also do a forehead touch here and there, which to homophobes might be a little 'gay'. Of course, the way I remember it Tyne and Meg were friends, so they were comfortable in each other's personal space. Was it a 'lesbian comfort''? I don't think so, but people will see what they want to see. Anyway, this first season was a solid start and set a tone of what would follow. Was it right to replace Meg? I think the critics had some merit when they mentioned a similarity between the two, but see the eps for yourself and be the judge.
